Questions About Resume and Cover Letter Writing

What key elements should I include in a resume for a job promotion?

In addition to relevant accomplishments, you need to demonstrate your leadership and personal skills. Create a branding statement to launch the resume. Make it clear, concise and competition-crushing. Engage readers immediately so that they continue to engage and act!

How should I highlight my achievements and contributions within the company on my resume?

  • Use metrics to showcase how your accomplishments hit new performance levels.
  • Briefly tell your stories on how you made improvements from start to finish.
  • Take credit for initiatives you recommended and executed, as well as projects assigned to you for implementation.

Should I tailor my resume differently when applying for an internal promotion?

Your resume needs to sync with the culture of the company you apply to, whether the company is new to you or where you’re currently employed. In both internal and external job postings, be sure to hit the values the organization embraces and how you align with them.

Is it necessary to include all previous roles or focus solely on relevant experiences?

Every single role is not needed. If you’re a seasoned professional, cut off your work experience around the year 2000. The last 10 or so years are most relevant due to rapid changes in technology, workplace, company cultures, marketplace and so much more.

What strategies can I use to showcase my readiness and qualifications for a higher-level position on my resume?

Show how you have accomplished the required qualifications. More importantly, let future employers know how you’re poised to succeed in the future.

Mention that you took on additional or similar responsibilities to the ones listed. You may not have had the job title at the time, but you still did the work and need to take credit for it. Otherwise, how would hiring managers know you have the capabilities they’re seeking?

Questions About Networking

I know networking is key to my job search success. I am an introvert who avoids it. Can you help me with that?

Yes! Believe it or not, I’m an introvert with infusions of extroverted behavior. I’ve learned that by just being myself, fears are nonexistent. Tip: Focus on sharing information with new people and really listening to them. People are wired to help others, and a job search is no exception. End each discussion by asking how you can help them.

I don’t have a network. How do I get started?

You have people who will attest to your skills, achievements and admirable qualities. With a quick chat, we can build a list of folks ready to help you. I’m also happy to share individuals from my circle of trust who meet your goals.
